About Masaki's Auto Repair

Masaki's Auto Repair was established in 1983.
Years ago, brothers Dave and Daryl Masaki used to shadow their father as he worked on cars at their Manoa home. He was a trained auto technician, and inspired their fascination with cars and engines. While both brothers continued their affinity for anything with an engine, their paths slightly diverged for a period of time. Dave went into the automotive repair field as his main profession, while Daryl sought a degree from the University of Hawai`i and began working in finance.

In the early 80's, Daryl returned to the auto industry, and both brothers were now ASE Certified mechanics. They decided to open their own auto repair shop, and located a suitable location at 2457 S. King St., close to the current Moili`ili Long's. It offered 3 bays for them to work on vehicles, and thus, Masaki's Automotive Repair started its story.

This served as their business location for several years until they located their current location that was previously occupied by a slipper company. The Masaki brothers subleased the location for a while until they managed to purchase the existing property in 2019 for the permanent home of Masaki's Auto Repair.

The current location has much more parking and space for working on vehicles as well as their tire business. From here, they offer all of their automotive repair services, hybrid car repair, battery replacement, and tires.

In the early 2000's, Toyota released the first iteration of the Prius hybrid car.
The Masaki brothers realized what an advancement this was, and were always looking for new ways to improve their offerings to customers. They saw this as a great opportunity to learn and specialize in something that was unique to the auto world.

Aside from learning everything they could on their own, both brothers attended training courses on the mainland and became the first (and still only) certified independent auto repair shop on Oahu. The popularity of the Toyota Prius and other hybrid cars continued to grow, and so did business for the Masakis. Their repair shop was now becoming the standard for this enivronmentally-friendly mode of transportation, and people were starting to realize that it needed a specific kind of attention to properly care for and maintain this type of auto. A standard repair shop did not have the training or expertise to do this, and many times they could offer more cost-effective solutions than even the dealer.

Masaki's Auto Repair continued to grow its customer base for Hybrid Car Repair, and now it makes up a little more than half of their regular business. The brothers also expanded into the sale of hybrid batteries, and also offer some service and repair to electric vehicles.
